If KDP's minimum is 24 pages, how many illustrations do I need?

Updated · 3 min read ·

Short answer

KDP's paperback minimum is 24 pages, and it counts every page of your PDF, so 24 pages is 12 printed leaves, front and back. Most picture books are 32 pages, a printing convention rather than a KDP rule, so plan the art page by page or spread by spread around the title and copyright pages.

What it costs with me, Jooneyd: My picture books, with art, layout and cover, are $1,499 for 24 pages, $1,899 for 32 and $2,299 for 40.

How KDP counts pages

KDP counts each page of your PDF, so each side of a leaf is one page. Odd pages sit on the right and even pages on the left. A 24-page book has 24 pages to fill, including the title and copyright pages.

Premium color runs from 24 to 828 pages. Standard color starts at 72 pages, so a short picture book must print in premium color.

Why most picture books are 32 pages

Offset printers fold big press sheets into 8- or 16-page signatures, so a 32-page book is two 16-page or four 8-page signatures. Endsheets are not counted. This is a publishing convention, not a KDP rule.

Before you count illustrations, map the book: which pages hold front matter, which are single pages and which are two-page spreads. A spread is one piece of art across two pages, so a book with spreads needs fewer pieces than pages.

Trim sizes, bleed and blank pages

  • Picture-book trims on KDP: 8.5×8.5, 8.25×8.25, 8×10, 8.5×11 and 8.25×6 (landscape).
  • Full-page art needs bleed: add 0.125 in to the width and 0.25 in to the height, so an 8.5×8.5 book becomes 8.625 × 8.75 in.
  • If one page bleeds, the whole file must be set up with bleed.
  • Images at 300 DPI.
  • No more than 4 blank pages in a row at the start or middle, and no more than 10 at the end.

Hardcover picture books

KDP hardcovers need 75–550 pages and come in only five trims, none of them square, so a hardcover picture book can't go through KDP. IngramSpark case laminate starts at 18 pages and comes in 8×8, 8.5×8.5, 8×10 and 8.5×11.

Common mistake

Reading 24 pages as 48 sides and planning twice as many illustrations as the book needs.
