Can I use my paperback cover file for the hardcover?

Updated · 3 min read ·

Short answer

Not as it is: a KDP hardcover cover wraps 0.51 in past the edge of the front cover, has a 0.4 in hinge and keeps text 0.635 in from the edge, while a paperback has only 0.125 in of bleed. The hardcover also needs its own ISBN, 75 to 550 pages and one of five trim sizes.

What it costs with me, Jooneyd: With me, a hardcover cover adds $150 to a cover, built on the hardcover template. A new cover starts at $599.

Why the paperback file won't fit

A hardcover cover wraps around boards, so the artwork runs 0.51 in (15 mm) past the edge and leaves room for a 0.4 in (10 mm) hinge. Text and images must sit 0.635 in (16 mm) from the edge. The file has to be rebuilt on the hardcover template as a single PDF.

Books over 120 pages also get a headband on the spine.

What KDP hardcovers offer

A hardcover needs its own ISBN, so update the copyright page too. The interior uses the same margin table as the paperback, but a 5×8 or 5.25×8 paperback has to be re-laid out, because those trims aren't offered in hardcover.

  • Case laminate only. Dust jackets, cloth binding and other hardcover formats aren't available.
  • Trims: 5.5×8.5, 6×9, 6.14×9.21, 7×10 and 8.25×11.
  • 75 to 550 pages.
  • Black ink on white or cream paper, or premium color. Standard color is not available.

IngramSpark and Lulu

IngramSpark casebound covers need 0.625 in bleed and wrap. It also offers dust jackets, which add 3.25 in flaps, and takes 18–840 pages. Lulu's casewrap needs a 0.75 in safety margin.

Common mistake

Stretching the paperback cover to hardcover size instead of rebuilding it on the hardcover template.
