How much does it cost to self-publish a children's book?

Short answer

Illustration is most of the bill: Reedsy's 2026 guide puts the art for a 24-page children's book at $1,890–$6,990. On top of that come the cover, layout, an ISBN you own, proof copies and optional editing.

What it costs with me, Jooneyd: My picture books, with art, layout and cover, are $1,499 for 24 pages, $1,899 for 32 and $2,299 for 40.

The budget, line by line

All figures are in US dollars.

  • Illustration: $1,890–$6,990 for a 24-page children's book (Reedsy, Aug 2026).
  • Cover: children's book covers average $740 on Reedsy (Aug 2026).
  • Layout: $250–$750 for a separate interior designer (Reedsy children's guide, Oct 2025). Many picture-book illustrators include it.
  • ISBN: KDP's free ISBN works on KDP only. To use one ISBN on both KDP and IngramSpark you need your own; US authors can buy one through IngramSpark for $85.
  • Proof copies: KDP charges the print cost plus shipping. A 24–40 page premium color paperback in a large trim such as 8.5×8.5 costs $4.20 to print on Amazon.com, and proof orders don't get free or Prime shipping.
  • Editing (optional): for a 1,000-word picture book, Reedsy editors charge on average $374 for a developmental edit and $231 for a copy edit (Oct 2025).

What the total looks like

Reedsy's children's guide (updated Oct 2025) puts editing, illustration, cover and formatting together at $2,387–$4,400 on average. Its newer 2026 range for illustration alone runs higher, so get quotes for the art first and build the rest of the budget around it.

What pushes the price up

The number of illustrations matters most. A 32-page book costs more than a 24-page one, and full spreads, detailed backgrounds and a hardcover all add to the quote.

Printing matters too. On KDP a short picture book has to print in premium color, because standard color starts at 72 pages.

My prices, for comparison

My picture-book price covers illustration, layout, lettering and the paperback cover in one fee: from $1,499 for 24 pages, $1,899 for 32 and $2,299 for 40. A hardcover cover is $100 more. If you already have your art, layout, lettering and cover start at $449.
