How much does it cost to illustrate a children's book?
Short answer
Illustrating a full picture book typically costs from about $1,500 to $7,000, and Reedsy's 2026 guide puts a 24-page children's book at $1,890–$6,990. The price depends mostly on how many pieces you need, how detailed the backgrounds are, and whether the cover and print-ready layout are included.

Count the pieces before you ask for quotes
The number of illustrations drives the quote more than anything else. Map your 24 or 32 pages into full pages, two-page spreads and small spot art first. A spread is one piece of art across two pages, and it usually costs more than a single page.
Put the print specs in the contract
IngramSpark warns that a book built from low-resolution illustrations can't simply be fixed later. So agree the print specs in writing before the art starts.
